Mission Statement

Answers About Competency strives to:
  • foster better practice for psychologists involved in competency and capacity assessment;
  • foster better practice for lawyers involved in competency cases;
  • promote the protection of the rights and interests of people who are vulnerable because of a brain-based disorder;
  • promote better communication between psychologists and lawyers working together in this area of the law.

Our Education Staff

  • Dr. Valerie Stone (BA, Harvard, 1985; PhD Stanford, 1990) is an international educator and researcher focusing on how to protect individuals with dementia, head injury, autism, or Asperger syndrome. She has published many scientific articles on how to assess social skill and social vulnerability in such groups, is currently researching measurement of competency with colleagues at the Queensland Guardianship Tribunal, and sits on the editorial board of two scientific journals devoted to neuroscience.

  • Dr. Stephen Greenspan (BA, Johns Hopkins, 1965; PhD U of Rochester, 1976) is a national expert on the protection of those with developmental disabilities. He has published numerous scientific articles and books on assessing adaptive behavior in people with developmental disabilities, and on protecting those who are vulnerable. Dr. Greenspan serves as an expert witness in many trials and hearings protecting the rights of individuals with developmental disabilities on death row, after Atkins v. Virginia, 2002.

Diversity Policy

Answers About Competency supports equal opportunities for and fair treatment of all individuals, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or disability status. We aim to provide a supportive educational environment and to address students’ questions about diversity issues in our curriculum.

Americans with Disabilities Act

Our continuing education courses are offered only in facilities that are physically accessible according to the Americans with Disabilities Act. If you are a student with a disability and you require something in particular, please email us (ADAneeds@assesscompetency.com) and we will work with you to make appropriate accommodations for your situation.

Payment Policies

Organizations contracting for a workshop

A 40% deposit is due 3 weeks before the workshop date. (See notes below about payment by check.) The remaining 60% of the payment is due by the workshop date. In the unlikely event that Answers About Competency must cancel the workshop because of illness or unforeseen circumstances, the deposit is fully refundable. Failure to pay the deposit or the remainder by the due dates means that Answers About Competency may cancel the workshop.
Methods of payment accepted: Secure credit card transaction, either through PayPal or over the phone; electronic funds transfer via PayPal; or check received 5 business days before the due date.
Answers About Competency does not accept purchase orders.

Individuals paying for a workshop

Early registration: Payment in full is due 21 days before the registration deadline date.
Late registration: Payment in full is due 5 business days before the workshop date. (See notes below about earlier payment if paying by check). You are not registered for the workshop until Anwers About Competency receives payment.
If you must cancel your participation, you will receive a full refund if you cancel 3 or more days before the workshop date. If you cancel 2 days or less before the workshop, 60% of your workshop fee is refundable. No-shows without notification do not receive a refund. Minimum number of participants is usually 10. In the unlikely event that we do not reach this number by 21 days before the workshop date, the workshop will be cancelled and everyone will receive a full refund.

Lawyers paying for consulting

We will invoice your firm. Payment is due within one month (20 business days) of receipt of the invoice. Late fees may accrue after that point in time.

Answers About Competency does not accept purchase orders.
